Triangirls: On Leadership πͺπ» Pay Negotiations π€ Book Launch π - Issue #5
This coming Tuesday, November 27, is the final Triangirls Social of 2018. Can you believe it?! It's been a really great month. Rachael and I have been working hard to secure venues and sponsorship for events next year, we've been creating and gathering content from our community, and have launched triangirls.com.
We've also been making appearances at other design events to talk about socials - it's great to see so many newbies in #triangirlsocial.
We've been sent some heartwarming testimonials from those who have found friendship, jobs and help starting their own businesses via relationships made through Triangirls. Please keep sharing your stories: this is exactly why this community exists. Just like mine and Rachael's origin story, if you like, we can share yours. It gives us life!
You lot are fabulous β¨

π Triangirls November Social
This month, we will be chatting about design leadership and pay negotiations.
If you haven't got your tickets for Tuesday, grab them via eventbrite.
What you can expect from the evening
We'll be keeping things light and casual as always, doors open from 6:30 for mingling, drinks and pizza.
Jane Austin will take the stage around 7:00: please make sure you arrive promptly so you don't miss a moment! We'll have a break before our lightning talk by SΓ€ra Furlong.
As always, the floor will be open if anyone wants to share. The content is up to you, whether you'd like to share a funny story, or tell us you are hiring, or start a debate. Let us know you'd like some time.Β
Feel free to stick around following the talks to finish off the remaining food and drinks, but keep in mind that we'll need to be out by 9pm. If you'd like to carry on the evening's conversation, we'll be hanging out at the Singer Tavern.
πͺπ» Jane Austin on Leadership
We are very pleased to have Jane sharing how she got to where she is today in her career, and what she's learned along the way.
Jane is an award-winning designer and has spoken and given keynotes at conferences all over the world. She is the Director of Product Design at Babylon Health, the UKβs leading digital healthcare service.
Previously, Jane was the Director of Design and UX at MOO. Before that, she helped grow the team at The Telegraph from one to twenty, led the redesign of their website and several apps. She has also worked at GDS (home of gov.uk), in an online trading firm, in start-ups and in agencies. She loves building high performing design teams and leading digital transformations.
Her talk 'The Three Stages of Leadership' covers the transitions she took. Jane admits that each of these three stages of leadership were very tough, painful, and sucky. She will talk about the mistakes she made and the lessons she learned, and gives hard-won advice so that when you get promoted you wonβt suck at all.
πΈ SΓ€ra Furlong on Pay Negotiations
We have the incredible SΓ€ra from Octopus Labs kindly joining us. Formally Design Lead at IBM Watson and Karmarama (Accenture Interactive) Sara is currently a Design Lead for Octopus Labs, London.
In Sara's lightning talk, she'll be discussing some of the studies that suggest why women are on average less likely than men to negotiate for what they want and some tips from her own career experience on how we can help to combat this problem together in our own small way.
In 2018, some things are still a little hard to swallow. Men and women are largely still treated unequally in the workplace. Women continue to earn less, on average, for the same performance, and they remain underrepresented in top jobs. While some recent figures show that the representation of women in tech is on the rise, research has also shown that both conscious and subconscious biases contribute to the ever-present problem of inequality. But is there another, subtler cause of the issue: Women often donβt get what they want and deserve because they donβt ask for it?
We will be hosted by Busuu, in their beautiful Finsbury Square offices, see you there!
β Triangirls October Social
We were lucky enough to have the fabulous Zoe Laughlin join us. A big thank you to Geckoboard, who were incredible hosts. The space had a wonderful auditorium feel, and was perfect for the evening.
Zoe explained her approach to creating physical products on her TV show BBC's The Big Life Fix. Her approach to creating physical products had many parallels to designing Digital Products. She would spend a lot of time getting to know the user (in this case Tobijah - a man who'd had a car crash that left him paralysed from the chest down) to learn what problems he was facing, and then invent ways in which she could help.
It was decided to help him with something small, but with a huge impact on his life: baking. During the early prototyping phase, a proof of concept was tested on Tobijah. Zoe made a glove with some strings sewn into the fingers, so that when pulled, the fingers pinched. After testing out how this felt to Tobijah, Zoe then built something a bit more high-tech, that pinched on voice command! Hearing Zoe explain her process, and how this made such a real impact on a whole family, was just amazing!
We then opened the floor for our lightning talks: over 5 ladies stood up and spoke about various topics. There was a variety of topics such as Framer, the prototyping tool, and a shout-out about a project to design a better sex education experience for school children.
What shone through was how comfortable and relaxed we all felt. Seeing each other gaining the confidence to stand up in front of a crowd of people for the first time was incredible. There was a strong sense of everyone wanting to help one another.
You can find all the photographs taken during the evening on our website.
πΊ Meet the Triangirls
A huge congratulations to Rachel McConnell for publishing her book Why you need a content team and how to build one. It is a great resource to help companies that havenβt yet recognised why they need to invest in content experts. It explains content maturity levels, and highlights the benefits content experts bring. It also outlines the different content roles (and differences between them) and provides some tips on recruitment and team management. This is a brilliant book for designers and would be a great gift for the workplace bookshelf in companies that should consider investing in hiring content specialists. So what are you waiting for? Go get it!
